Behind The Rental: A Tender, Unexpected Connection In Tokyo

A heartfelt review of my rental boyfriend experience in Tokyo

💭 Why Rent a Boyfriend?

I’ll admit it — I’ve been feeling a little lonely lately.
So while in Japan, I decided to try something… different.

Yes, I rented a boyfriend.

It’s a real thing here. In Japan, you can rent a girlfriend or a boyfriend for a few hours — not for anything romantic or physical, but simply to share time, conversation, and connection.

Think of it like hiring a friend for a temporary date — someone to eat with, walk around with, and talk to without judgment.

💻 Booking the Date

Booking was easier than I thought — even as a foreigner who doesn’t speak Japanese.
I browsed the platform, which listed dozens of “boyfriend profiles” complete with:

  • Photos
  • Personality descriptions
  • Height, weight, and blood type (yes, seriously)
  • “Special skills” (mine was apparently skilled at werewolf, the game)

Since I mentioned I wanted to film the experience, they matched me with the #1 boyfriend on the site.

👋 Meeting My Rental Boyfriend

I was nervous — who wouldn’t be? But the moment Susia, my rental boyfriend, arrived, I felt at ease.

He was polite, gentle, and — most importantly — respectful of boundaries.
We had a translator (shoutout to Yoshi!) to help us talk, and we started with a simple walk and a visit to a café.

We even held hands for a bit. For me, that was huge.

I hadn’t held someone’s hand in so long — it actually meant something.

🍴 Lunch, Games & Heartfelt Moments

Our “date” included:

  • Walking through Miyashita Park
  • Sharing a meal together
  • Playing arcade games
  • Taking silly Purikura (photo booth) pictures
  • Even trying to win me a stuffed animal (he failed, but A+ effort!)

We laughed. We joked. We talked about love, ideal types, and our lives.
And no — it wasn’t romantic. It was refreshingly platonic and sweet.

💰 How Much Does It Cost?

The service charges by the hour, and the client pays for:

  • Meals
  • Activities
  • Transportation
  • Optional extras (like hand-holding)

For example:

  • Holding hands? That’s an additional ~$35
  • Going to an amusement park? You pay for both tickets
  • Staying together for 2–3 hours? Expect around $100–$200 total

It might sound transactional — but surprisingly, it didn’t feel that way.

😳 Was It Awkward?

Not at all.

Even with the language barrier, Susia was patient and kind.
He said he’s had girlfriends from Singapore, China, and even New York — some of whom didn’t speak Japanese either. They used translation apps and still managed to connect.

💔 But Was It Lonely?

A little.

At the end of the day, I knew it was a paid interaction.
That’s the part that hits the hardest.
But it also helped me reflect on how much we all just want connection — even if it’s temporary.

🧠 So… Is Renting a Boyfriend Weird?

Not anymore.

It’s not about love.
It’s not about pretending.
It’s about companionship — safe, clear, and intentional.

In a world where we’re more connected than ever but still feel alone, services like this offer a soft space to land — even for just a few hours.

🚀 Final Thoughts

Would I do it again?
Honestly… yes.

Not because I need a boyfriend — but because sometimes, we all just need someone to be there.
And for two hours in Tokyo, I wasn’t alone.
